Precise navigation – RTK or PPK on board of the UAS

Normal UAS usually use a modern GNSS, i.e. a receiver for GPS, Glonass, BeiDou and Galileo. However, these systems are subject to inaccuracies up to 5 metres

For numerous applications, this might well be sufficient, but if you require images with extremely high position accuracy, you need highly precise location data.

This is particularly the case for surveys, orthophotos or the exact positioning of the aircraft system. There are quite a few manufacturers, products and service providers on the market, but only a handful of products are actually suitable for UAS. In addition, these RTK systems are usually rather expensive and not designed for installation on an aircraft system.

Due to the strong demand and frequent customer orders, we have validated and selected an RTK/PPK system that fulfils all of the requirements for using it in combination with a UAS.

We are an exclusive partner of Emlid, a manufacturer of professional RTK/PPK modules that can be used with drones but also in other configurations, e.g. in a classic set-up or on other platforms.

The system comprises two modules, each with its own GNSS receiver. One is used on board the UAS (rover) and the other as a fixed ground station (base).

The configuration process by way of an app is very straightforward. As far as our configurations with pixhawk are concerned, the two modules are connected via the already existing telemetry link providing the rover with its correction data. The corrected position can then be used for navigation and/or transferred to cameras or sensors in order to provide them with position information.

You can use this simple and cost-effective solution for RTK or PPK (post-processed kinematic) positioning in line with your specific requirements and without having to decide about the actual process in advance.
